The average person takes about 10,000 steps each day. When a foot imbalance or biomechanical abnormality is present, there can be abnormal forces on the feet, knees, hips, back and /or neck that lead to pain and poor function. Orthotics allow your feet, legs, hips, pelvis and lower back to function more efficiently to reduce strain and pain from many different structures. They restore natural walking and running patterns, and play an extremely important roll in the prevention and long-term solution of many problems in the feet, legs and hips.
At the Ratoath Clinic, we don’t just look at your feet - we perform a full and detailed examination and movement analysis of the whole lower limb to identify any problems that may be contributing to the presenting condition. Often this physical examination will identify a muscle or joint problem that is causing the discomfort and lead to simple corrective exercises being prescribed that, alone or in conjunction with an orthotic, resolves the problem and returns you to full function.
Tiny feet need very special care. We also specialise in the prescription of orthotics for children to correct foot deformities and to encourage a normal walking pattern.
Orthotics are particularly effective in relieving foot fatigue and discomfort experienced by older adults, who may have developed arthritis in their feet.
In athletic individuals, sports activities result in a great deal of movement and pressure on the foot. Slight imbalances in the foot that are not harmful or even detectable under usual circumstances may make one more vulnerable to injury with the extra stress of sports activity. By eliminating the need for one's muscles to compensate for small imbalances, orthotics can reduce fatigue and promote efficient muscle function to enhance performance. With enough functional correction, the foot structure can be aligned to give more propulsion, making walking, running and cycling more mechanically efficient
The most expensive orthotic is not always the best. We also stock a wide variety of simple off the shelf orthotics. We prescribe custom orthotics formed from plaster casts of the feet and made in a lab to produce an orthotic unique to your foot. Your physiotherapist will advise you on what is the most appropriate option based on your examination, your footwear and your budget. We strive to prescribe orthotics that are both effective and comfortable.
